the spirit of Camp is so joyful

By Aimee Cozza / November 18, 2025

Totally fabulous. …The spirit of Camp is so joyful and fun and silly and accepting all at once.

from our campers

I was looking for community and to meet other people on a similar journey. The fact that I could choose a nonbinary cabin made it clear that that was possible. It was tremendously nourishing to spend that week in such an intentional and inclusive community and it is wonderful to still be in connection throughout the year.

— Aren L. (they/them)
Glouster, MA

Camp is truly the most relaxing week of my year. The new camp facility has so many great amenities that make the week even more enjoyable.

— Denise T. (she/her)
Washington, DC

I had a truly life-changing time at Camp last year. The warmth, friendliness, and complete lack of cliqueishness was incredible and addictive.

— Zach B. (he/him)
New Orleans, LA

This is the most incredible creation of community and culture I believe exists on this planet, and that’s not just for queer people. I can’t imagine cultivating this type of non-judgmental, loving and edifying space anywhere else. … My goal is to NEVER miss another summer. Ever. Period.

— Chris D. (he/him)
Arlington, MA

Coming out later in life I’ve never experienced being around people who identify similar to me. Being accepted and loved for who I am as an individual was one of the best things I’ve ever felt. … I look forward to this every year and think about it during the year. Thank you for allowing me to build friendships with people around the world and learn new things and ideas and perspectives to enrich my life. I think what we have here is a special thing, and I wish the outside world was more like ‘Camp’ Camp.

— Jeffrey W. (he/him)
Cathedral City, CA

On the first full day, I got ready for the barn dance with some of my cabinmates and felt like I had a friend group almost immediately.

— Valerie C. (they/them)
Portland, OR

Camp has become a yearly necessity, like taxes but far more pleasurable!

— Thom H. (he/him)
Salem, MA

When I leave ‘Camp’ Camp each year I have a renewed faith in mankind. It is a week of acceptance, joy, laughter & fun. It is a week of smiles when you greet new friends or people pass you. It’s where you can try new things and not worry about how good you are, rather did you enjoy trying it.

— Mary Ellen M. (she/her)
Birdsboro, PA

My favorite thing that happened was walking to breakfast on Wednesday and starting to skip. I don’t skip. I hate skipping. But I noticed that I did that, and I was like, shittttt, I’m so happy right now…

— CJ W. (he/him)
Berwick, PA

I’m close to my biological family but Campers are my chosen family, however odd and quirky. Every year I look forward to my annual family reunion. But what is becoming more important for me is how Camp gives space to all those loving, odd, quirky folks who find their way to Camp and are finally able to be in such a loving, fun-loving, accepting space.

— Ann G. (she/her)
Topsham, ME

Seeing younger people shout out old people and older people shout out young people. That intergenerational connection always makes me cry. It’s so rare!

— Michael G. (he/him)
Brooklyn, NY

I was looking for a soul family and to feel seen. I found what I’m looking for and I don’t plan to leave.

— Adam H. (he/she/they)
Lodi, NJ

As a first year and a bisexual, I was worried about being othered and not queer enough during the week or too big and loud. While I did have moments of not knowing anyone and worrying about being included or too much, NOT ONE PERSON made me feel separate and othered. I was welcomed with a smile and encouragement every single time.

— Mel A. (she/her)
Colonial Beach, VA

I was quiet upon my arrival, skeptical about EVERYTHING (the place, the people, and whether I’d have a good time, could recharge). Within minutes of entering Camp, everyone already seemed to know who I was. I can’t remember the first hug I received, only that I received so many. With each passing hour I opened up, amazed I had indeed found my happy place and love. Camp became the best solid week of my life.

— H.L. S. (he/him)
Silver Spring, MD

I didn’t feel like I had much of a connection to the queer community in general and I’ve been wanting to find somewhere to just exist in a queer space and make more queer friends … just getting to meet so many people and really feel like I had found my community. Getting to know and connect with so many older queer women was genuinely so cool and special for me!

— Hannah B. (she/her)
West Newton, MA

I LOVE the people, the activities, the sincerity in everyone in their genuine desire to be free and authentic.

— Joe S. (he/him)
Enterprise, AL

My friends never stop talking about it, and now I know why!

— Jason S. (he/him)
Brooklyn, NY

…just do it. It is a life changing experience and you will not regret it. I flew 24 hours to get there, so worth every moment.

— Brett P. (he/him)
S. Perth, Australia

For the first time in my 44 years, I found a place, a people, where I belong. I BELONG! I FIT IN! OMG I’m ALWAYS the outcast, the lone wolf, the misfit. I’ve grown accustomed to it. I march to a different drum. But at ‘Camp’ Camp, EVERYONE does. We are all beautiful, loving misfits, and I was seen, truly seen, for the first time ever. You can go your whole life without ever finding that.

— Aletha G. (she/her)
Colonial Beach, VA

I will be returning because I had an amazing time with everyone. The community is filled with so much love, laughter and generosity. I believe I have found my home away from home. … I feel so lucky to get the opportunity to come here and meet all kinds of like-minded people, who are all so generous and kind.

— Jordan B. (he/him)
Halifax, W. Yorkshire, UK

I fell in love with the whole ‘Camp’ Camp community, my new queer family. … Hearing people’s stories, seeing how talented and creative they were. I loved that women & non-binary & trans folks were so supportive. I was also very moved by the vulnerability of cis men sharing the truths about their lives.

— Noam A. (he/him)
South Burlington, VT

Camp has changed the way I feel about myself. It fills my heart with so much love and joy that I can make it through another year in the Heteronormative world. Camp is SO healing.

— Clare N. (she/her)
Morro Bay, CA

It really exceeded all expectations!! I can’t really think of much that I would change about my Camp experience, I really liked it all and was impressed by everything. …the social aspect of everything and just getting to hang out with everyone around Camp was the best part to me.

— Finley W. (he/him)
Yorktown, VA

Totally fabulous. …The spirit of Camp is so joyful and fun and silly and accepting all at once.

— Daphne B. (she/her)
Mashpee, MA

I have never experienced such a sense of community, support, love, candor, and friendship. The queer community and the larger world can be devastatingly brutal at times especially for those of us who already suffer from a lack of confidence or self-worth. I will be forever grateful for finding my kind.

— Sean B. (he/him)
Pikesville, MD

Camp is a safe, magical place for me. A place I can prove to myself I can do things.

— Coco H. (she/her)
Hollis Center, ME

I was able to relax and feel welcomed immediately. I needed that so bad. You can’t keep me away. It may be the most important positive experience in my life.

— Caralee I. (she/her)
Tucson, AZ

Is it August yet?

— Amy P. (she/her)
Claremont, NH

It’s one of the few places I feel most seen for who I am and valued for it in a way I don’t feel valued for it in the world all the time. It lifts me up for the rest of the year.

— Jon M. (he/him)
Brooklyn, NY

…I truly feel wanted & like I am part of this family. Camp has enveloped me in love and shows me that I am valuable just as I am – no strings attached. … The people always bring me back. Each year it becomes more important for me to return the next.

— Collette B. (she/her)
Waxhaw, NC

I laughed and smiled more in one week at ‘Camp’ Camp than in the entire rest of the year. It was so inclusive and supportive and filled with utter joy!

— Rick D. (he/him)
Washington, DC

‘Camp’ Camp has woken up the joys of living, of experiencing life, of socializing with people, all sorts of innocence lost with age and work…

— Kat L. (he/she/they)
Mission Viejo, CA

Why would I not return? It’s the Best Time Ever!

— Vicki H.-F. (she/her)
Ann Arbor, MI

Thank you all for making a safe and inclusive space for us to connect. It’s clear that after 27 years this crew has honed the camp to offer a lot of really valuable, inclusive details to make it a comprehensively lovely experience.

— Andre R. (he/she/they)
New York, NY

I was really able to just relax and be social when I wanted to and be in solitude when I needed. No pressure to do anything. All the smiles and hellos and laughing. Something I miss in everyday life.

— Rick R. (he/him)
Sacramento, CA

Camp just feels like home! I love the community, so I was really excited to hang out with my old friends again and meet all the lovely new folks. I also just love being in nature and without a cell phone, so part of the enjoyment comes from that ability to disconnect and just be with people.

— Audrey B. (she/her)
Somerville, MA

It really did exceed my already high expectations. I felt like a kid, but this time without the bullying. I’m 61 and felt completely comfortable. … To quote the song, I had the time of my life. Thank you.

— David G. (he/him)
Avondale Estates, GA

It wasn’t any one thing. It was the entire atmosphere of people being friendly and supportive. Everyone made it feel like an actual community and I wish real life felt more like camp.

— Ryan D. (he/him)
Austin, TX

The summer camp experience itself was everything I hoped it would be, and the people were beyond my wildest expectations. I have never felt so free.

— B B. (they/them)
Gallatin Gateway, MT

As soon as I got home I couldn’t wait to go back. This year, especially, was truly my best time ever.
